The debate
on whether spirituality or science is the better idea to subscribe to is not
seen to end anytime soon. This does not mean, though, that the two thoughts
cannot co-exist, as proven by the presence of religious materials on the
internet. Technology is turning out to be an effective platform for faith-based
organizations to reach out to their flock.
There are
several ways to do this; the first, through electronic mail. Automated mailing
lists are set up by religious ministries to send out newsletters, service
schedules, readings, and other literature deemed to enrich the spiritual lives
of their followers.
Another is
through putting up websites where the faithful can converge virtually. Online
counseling links and discussions can be accommodated here to allow religious
followers to get updated on the activities in their
ministries. Websites are likewise valuable to religious leaders who want to
hear from members and receive feedback and suggestions.
Social
media, on the other hand, is a potent tool for members of religious
congregations to do “witnessing:” a public affirmation of faith, particularly
popular among born-again Christians. Many followers have used sites like
Facebook and Twitter for witnessing so everyone they know will be aware of
their religious status.
